Most of us spend far too much time absorbing bad news from newspapers, tv and radio. Constant immersion in the loud and negative cloud of mass media is bad for one's peace-of-mind, and it doesn't really keep us informed. I didn't know this until recently, when I gave up newspapers and other mass media for a week--and then completely. I believe you don't have to spend hours of your day gathering the details of the worst tragedies in the world to be a good citizen of the world or of your community. You may want to try giving up newspapers and other mass media for a week and judge for yourselves. I think you will be amazed at how much more time you have for those things you never could quite get to, and how much more peaceful and secure you will feel. "I had not realized the toll that the barrage of negative news and detailed information from the entire the outside world had been taking on me. I had been overstimulated with the endless flow of facts about all the bad things people do to each other. This had had a corrosive effect on my entire outlook. I now think it is strange that we as media consumers feed on bad news and negative things when mainly good things happen in the world. I started seeing more of those good things. And I realized that the bad things that actually happen to the people in our actual orbit are much fewer in number and less horrible than all the news in the media. Why not just deal with our own lives? I had felt overwhelmed by the news, and I had not even realized it. The news had made me sick, and I was now in the process of healing...."
